Five Easy Ways to Practice Self-Care

Ask for help

There is nothing wrong with asking for help, it takes a village to live life, identify your village and use it. We were made to live in communities, no one is an island, but in the spirit of guarding our hearts and spirits, we also need to be mindful of who we allow to be in our space. Not to say that you are better than anyone but if it is not adding to your growth, cut it off.

Set Boundaries
We all have boundaries but sometimes we get caught up in playing nice, and push them too far. It is okay to say no to the things that do not work for us. If it is not helping you grow or giving you joy, kindly decline and keep it moving. I cannot stress enough how important it is to guard your heart at all price, cultivate joy and maintain your peace. You’ll be a better person for it.

Forgive yourself
It is good to remember our mistakes so we do not repeat them but we also have to let them go in order to grow and glow. We are not perfect and that is not a new narrative, we are going to make mistakes, I only hope that we do not continue on paths that we know are destructive and we learn from the past. Say it out loud: I forgive myself. Mean it, breathe and make better choices. Forgiving yourself is one of the best self-care act you can do.

Read
It is said that our eyes are windows to our souls so the things that we allow our eyes to see is going to set the atmosphere. That being said, read something motivational, read something you can learn from. Keep a book at your bed side and aim for at least a chapter before bed. Social media is great, but it does not have to be the last thing we see before going to bed. We can control our mood and emotion by feeding our brain (and body) positivity.

Pray
Pray an active prayer. Work your faith. It’s no use for you to be praying without believing and working towards your miracles. As you pray, you have to prepare yourself for the answer. You have to believe that you deserve what you’re praying for. Make it a habit, a lifestyle and be positive that it will shift your life in the right direction.

May 2019 Must Haves

I want to share with you some amazing items that have become part of my daily life and this month, they have made the list as my top five.

Come back every month for my five Must haves of the month, there will sometimes be random giveaways that you do not want to miss out on.

  • Rae Dunn Agenda: I love the idea of writing things down, it makes me feel like I am holding myself accountable. Rae Dunn makes the best products, there is a certain simplicity that their products inspire that makes you feel like whatever it is can be easy. I map out all my shenanigans in my Rae Dunn Hidden Agenda, I make notes and I write down my affirmations so I can keep myself accountable and do the work. I leave little gems in my agenda to remind myself how phenomenal I am made to be. I picked mine up from Marshalls. TJMaxx also has a great selection but you can always find them on Amazon.
  • Silence Candle: this candle is from Saje Natural Wellness and it is one of my all-time favorites. It is a mood enhancing candle made of notes of Lavender, Geranium and Sage to calm, stabilize and uplift. It helps me feel calm and I like burning it just to clear my mind and recharge. There is something about sage that just calms you down and restart your mind. If you are so lucky to live close to a Saje store, visit them for your natural goodies, if not, go to their website.
  • Allergy Release Roll-on: This amazing product is also from Saje Natural Wellness and it is a must have for the allergy season. I love spring and summer because I love enjoying a good festival but it is also allergy season, so you go outdoors at your own risk. With this roll-on, no pollen formed against me shall prosper! I just roll it on my sinus area before leaving the house, and I am good to go!
  • The Honey Pot Feminine Wash: this is my plant based goodness from The Honey Pot Company and it is part of my daily routine. If you are not using plant based feminine products, stop reading and go to the Honey Pot website to take care of your business. You’re welcome! I use this product guilt-free because I know as I am keeping my goodies fresh, I am not introducing anything artificial to my body. Plus I feel good that it is made by women for women.
  • Curls Avocado Mousse: This mousse from Curls’ green collection is the business! I use it alone for a twist out or with my favorite moisturizer and I am never disappointed! My curls are moisturized and THEY HOLD UP! The green collection from Curls is a vegan line and it is BOMB. Of course because of the natural goodness that it is made of, it is safe on kids too. Seriously, grab them from Target before they’re disappear because this stuff doesn’t last on the shelf.

Is the use of Sage really an unholy ritual?

People have been using sage for centuries for many reasons but in some circles, they manage to give it a non-biblical connotation which makes certain people and by certain people I mean the saints, feel guilty about using it.

Many people believe in demons but they do not want to wake them or get involved with them, which makes sense because why would you? Being born and raised in Haiti, I know my fair share of my heritage and the role that Voodoo plays in it, so growing up in the church, it seemed safe to stay away from anything that may look like it has an association with Voodoo.

From a traditional standpoint, the idea of burning sage has been for the purpose of keeping demons at bay, creating safe energy, and cleansing yourself and your home. This practice has been used by Native Americans and many other tribes, now different people use the same practice as a spiritual ritual. I do believe that it takes more aggressive measures to keep demons at bay but that does not take away from all the health benefits you can reap by using this amazing herb! Let’s go over a few, shall we?

Burning sage releases an aroma therapeutic scent that’s known to relieve stress, improve sleep quality and uplift one’s mood. That alone can make me feel like I killed some demons! When I get good sleep, I wake up ready to conquer the world, and if there are any herbs that I can use to help with that, I believe it’s the safer choice for me.

Sage is also known to have anti-microbial properties, which is a huge health benefit. It is like spraying Lysol in your home, but a much safer one. It can help with pollution and mold so smudging sage does clear the air, but it might not be attacking the types of demons you think it’s attacking.

Sage is also full of antioxidants and it is an easy herb to add to your daily diet. It has been traditionally used to regulate blood sugar levels and enhance memory. You can blend it in your seasoning mix if you use a wet seasoning mix, use it as a rub, or put some leaves in your soup and stew.

Maybe the idea of smudging sage makes you feel ancient and archaic, that’s okay, because there are all types of other options for you. You can buy sage candles or essential oils for your diffuser that let you inhale the same goodness. I bet the saints wouldn’t mind you using a sage essential oil in your diffuser because the modernity of that cancels any possibility of that being a demonic ritual, right?

There might be groups of people that use sage as part of a spiritual ritual, but they are also using many other things like honey, lavender, and mint, rosemary and so on which are everyday things that we use. We don’t automatically get spiritual powers from using herbs, because we are not using them in that way, but we can always reap the health benefits from using natural remedies.

The bottom line is, sage is amazing! Like many other herbs, it has healing powers that all of us can benefit from. You may not like it because to each their own, but I hope the reason you’re not using it is not because you’re scared of getting involved in some spirit mess. Let me say, it would take more than sage to ward off evil spirits, I do believe they exist and if you feel attacked by them, GET RIGHT WITH GOD! BUT if the demons you’re fighting are Stress, Sleep Depravity, Bacteria in your home, just to name a few, then go right ahead and SAGE UP THE JOINT!

31 Days of Self Care Challenge

This month I’m leaving my twenties behind, such a fun decade, and I want to start my thirties on a new note!
I love taking care of people but I have learned that I cannot give what I don’t have so I’m going to pour goodness onto myself so I can fulfill my purpose.

Why I regret trying to speed up LABOR

If you are reading this, there is a good chance that you are very pregnant, tired and weary and you are ready to put this chapter behind you. The pregnancy that is. Every pregnancy is different so there is no cookie cutter way to being pregnant but legend has it that a few tricks can help speed up labor.

During my first full term pregnancy I had a lot going on including moving from one state to another with my then U.S Marine hubby, and my baby came a week prior to the due date I was given so I did not feel like I had enough time to worry. As a matter of fact, I remember wanting a bit more time. On my second full term pregnancy, I was overwhelmed at seven months. I started talking to baby early about exiting my womb. Again I did another major move because hubby was retiring from the Marines, just my luck, and everything my body thought was easy in the first pregnancy was a hurdle in the last.

By the time I got to 38 weeks, I was through with being pregnant! I was heavy and I was swollen from my face to my toes and I started looking for remedies to safely help this baby out! Hubby and I started walking for 30 minutes a day, which did not help. Since I am Haitian, the suggestions for home remedies kept making their ways to me so I ended up entertaining a few. My sister boiled raw peanuts and had me drink the stock, did not work for me. My mother in love cooked me a meal with okra, since it is slimy I guess she was hoping the same effect happened on my cervix, baby did not budge. When I went for my 39 weeks appointment, out of desperation I had the nurse stripped my membranes and I was sure that would do the trick but I was not so lucky. I did the baby mama dance with hubby, walked up and down three flights of stairs many times and lastly I drank some castor oil. Nothing helped! At least not for me.

Now I do not want you to get discouraged, because I have heard of people who rave about these methods but it could also be the fact that they were ready to give birth and they coincidentally used one of the methods above. If you are already active throughout your pregnancy and your doctor says it is okay for you to keep going, keep moving! But I have learned that baby will come when baby is ready, the wait might seem long but it is not longer than the many months you have been pregnant, plus increasing your level of activity is not a smart choice at the end of your pregnancy. After putting my body through all that at nine months pregnant, I was exhausted and when I got the hospital I was in labor for nearly 48 hours because I still was not dilated. I simply wished I had saved my energy for actual labor.

If your body is not ready, it does not matter what you do, baby will stay put until baby sees fit. I suggest you take plenty of warm baths, relax, have plenty of sex, as much as your body can go for, get a pregnancy massage and plenty of foot rubs at home. Put your feet up, sip on some tea and save your energy because you will need it for labor and beyond.
